Chosing wheel size

The design of a racing bike, mountain bike or kid's bike varies quite dramatically. They have one element in common - the wheels. This is one of the fundamental parts of a bicycle. The speed and type of ride depends on the wheels. After all, you can just ride in the city park, you can go on extreme mountain hikes, or you can rush along the highway, outrunning the wind. Today, sporting goods stores have an extensive range of bicycle wheels. In order to figure out which ones are needed in each specific case, this note is being written.

Bicycle wheel diameter

Influence of wheel diameter on speed performance of a bicycle.

If we consider this issue from the point of view of physics, then, in fact, the larger the size of the wheel, the longer the distance can be traveled in one rotation. Linear velocity is equal to the product of the angular velocity and the radius of the wheel. Consequently, a directly proportional dependence of the speed of movement on the size of the wheel is visible. However, will require more muscle strengh.

Conclusion: to accelerate, you need to spend more time and energy, but the speed will be higher. Therefore, in order to achieve increased speed performance on large wheels, it is worth seriously thinking about the physical capabilities of an amateur cyclist. That is, there are 2 options to choose from: "pump up" strength and endurance, or choose a bike with slightly smaller wheels.

Polish cyclists conducted an experiment to compare the speed qualities of mountain bikes with wheel sizes of 29 and 26 inches. The track was laid over rough terrain with climbs, stones, sand. As a result, the speed performance for bicycles with 29-inch wheels was 13 seconds worse. And as a result of the sprint competition, the result was almost the same.

Summary: For rides on a good road with occasional stops, it is more convenient to use a bicycle with wheels with a diameter of 29 inches. And for mountain hikes with frequent stops - with a size 26.

Off road features of the bicycle depending on the size of the wheel.

Consider that first of all, the cross-country ability (the ability to drive off-road) is influenced by the profile and width of the tire (it must be at least 2 inches). The deep, sculpted profile encourages bike movement over any rough terrain. 26 "wheels are more maneuverable on rocks, sand, etc. than 29" wheels. In addition, less effort is required to move the bike into place when stopping on difficult terrain.

Conclusion: before choosing a bike, you need to decide - what purposes it will be used for. And after that you can start choosing a specific type of bike, diameter and profile of the wheels. do not chose expensive top-end bicycles immediately - then it will be easier to replace it when you determine the priority type of riding and improve your personal skill.
